Last week I shared my New Year goals and the one word I’m focusing on this year: balance.

When I shared my goals and my word on my Instagram, I heard from some of you about your own goals. That’s one of my favorite parts of blogging – the opportunity to connect with other women who are on the same quest in this life to learn and grow and be our best version of ourselves.

I bet you’re just like me – fired up and ready to go in January with all my goals and resolutions fresh in my mind. Then, life settles in and day-to-day living takes over, we get tired, and our goals take a backseat.

The key is to create habits each day to keep us on the right track.

These are the three simple, concrete habits that I plan on doing every day to make sure that my goals of more adventure, more passion and more balance happen this year.

Habit #1: Using a paper planner every day

We all know life is busy with appointments, sports, school, work, homework for the kids, etc. There is so much to do all the time, but I’m challenging myself to think a little differently this year about my time to find more balance.

This year, I want to continue using my planners with the idea that I am only as busy as I want to be.  I am in control of my time. That means being mindful of what I am spending my time doing (hello, on the couch at night on Facebook or Netflix – ouch) allows me to see how I can be more intentional with my time to do more things I love with my family and for myself.

Habit #2: Key Jar – connecting with my family

Awhile back I read this post from one on my favorite bloggers, Glennon Doyle Melton, about using a Key Jar to connect with your kids over dinner. I was immediately intrigued by her words – “Unlocking the Key to your child’s heart.”

As a family, we make it a point to have dinner every night together, and while we go around the table and do highlights and low lights of the day from each of us, it can become rote and easy to fall back on quick answers.

I love Glennon’s idea of using this Key Jar each night and pulling one question for each of us to answer. The questions pull us out of our rut and make us connect after a long day of being apart.

There are 30+ thoughtful questions like, “When is it hard to be a friend?” and “What’s the biggest challenge facing the world today?” that make us all pause and think before we answer, giving us all a glimpse into each others’ hearts.

Do you see how wonderful these conversations can be? How the answers to these questions are a peek inside your child that you might not have had a chance to see on an otherwise mundane Monday night dinner?

Tom and I recently started using the Key Jar each night, and we have been amazed at the things we’re learning about our kids, and maybe more importantly, what they are learning about themselves.

Habit #3: Self-care

We all know that women are pretty amazing care givers. My little guy James likes to tell me that he thinks I’m the “warmest, softest mama” while he snuggles in. I love that so much.

When I was thinking about the habits that I want to start this year, I thought about what makes me feel the “warmest” and “softest.” Or in other words, what makes me feel loved and cared for that I can do regularly?

I brainstormed five things that make me feel good that do not involve money. This was a lot harder than I thought it would be! I wanted to make sure that the things I chose were not vacations, or shopping, or things like that and rather focused on what gives me a happy feeling that I can do consistently.

So, my challenge to you – what are five things that you can do for yourself to make taking care of you a priority?

Here are five things that make me happy that I vow to do more of:

  1. Make my bedroom a calm, tidy sanctuary that I can go to at night to read and relax
  2. Be creative every day: planning, crafting, writing, etc.
  3. Cook and bake for my family
  4. Listen to good music to create a mood – when the kids get home from school, cooking dinner, weekend cleaning – create a feeling for our home!
  5. Take 30 minutes a day to work on myself – personal development reading, exercise, journaling, etc. before the kids wake up.

Goal setting and resolutions are a wonderful way to plan out a successful year, and taking these aspirations one step further with concrete habits is sure to make this our best year yet.  I’d love to hear what you think of these habits, and any of your own, too.
