Tom and I took a jaunty, kid free weekend trip to Finger Lakes Wine Country, which is only about an hour’s drive from our home in NY. We ate many divine cheese plates, drank too much good wine (me), and acted like the young couple we were 10 years ago when we met.
In other words, we had one of the best weekends ever in our married life.
Wine tours are popular where we live near the Finger Lakes in NY, and we wanted to make sure we had the full experience at Dr. Konstantin Frank Wines . The 1886 Reserved Tasting Room was a treat not only for the special wine, food, and art pairings, but the newly renovated room itself was stunning to my design-loving eyes. The exposed stone and rough-hewn wood beams were charming.
We tried samples of delicious pairings of food and wine, while enjoying the curated art hung around the room. My favorites were the Eugenia, a 55th anniversary dry riesling, and I loved trying two new-to-me wines, the late harvest Chardonnay, and a spicy red called a Saperavi.
With no set schedule, we wandered around the vineyard and explored the cellars until our bellies started to rumble.
We stopped for lunch at Heron Hill Winery, where we ate beautiful charcuterie and cheese trays on the patio overlooking Keuka Lake.
Maybe one of my favorite memories of the trip was on the way to the inn after lunch. Tom spotted the end of the lake from the main road in town and found a quiet spot for us to sit and enjoy the view.
We were deep in a valley with the clear blue lake ahead, surrounded by hills on fire with the blazing oranges and reds of the season.
After awhile we headed up the road to the historic Pleasant Valley Inn where we were staying overnight.
Every detail at the inn was prettier than the last. The historic pink exterior, country wallpaper, oversized doors with arched moulding, and sparkling crystal chandeliers made our dinner later that night a treat to remember.
The next morning we woke up leisurely and enjoyed bagels and lox, cider and coffee, and candied walnut parfaits for breakfast before heading out to explore wine country again.
Now we’re back home and already planning our next lovely trip away.
